Welcome to World of Sanctuary

Post by medievaldragon » Sat Mar 23, 2019 2:33 am

The Diablo III community has lost a very valuable website that became the Go-To place to discuss one of our favorite Blizzard video games, and where to find the latest Diablo III Class Builds. That loss has affected everyone. Including me.

While only another Diablofans.com visitor for the past decade, I was a news writer for what was once known as Diablo3.com

The former domain name owner, Umaro, invited me to the website shortly after he visited an IRC Channel where I interviewed Richard A. Knaak (on October 26, 2006) concerning Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy. The author uttered the words: "The ramifications here will be used for any future project … and I ain’t writing for a dead game." Shortly after, he said: "I am not writing for a dead world … but a world with dead. ‘nuff said!"

This interview rocked the internet, with gaming sites like Gamespot, Kotaku, Shacknews, PlanetDiablo, and many others echoing Knaak's words.

At some point, Umaro informed me that Blizzard Entertainment had approached him by email. They wanted to acquire the Diablo3.com domain name from him. Umaro didn't hesitate. He transferred the domain name with only one request: "link to Diablofans.com for a few days." Request granted.

And so... the original Diablo3.com was reborn into "Diablofans.com."

We knew for weeks that Blizzard had something up their sleeves with this sudden request. Not long after, Blizzard Entertainment invited me to Paris, France to attend the 2018 Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals. Flight and Hotel covered. I knew it was coming. And it did. Diablo III was announced. Knaak's words didn't echo in vain. Diablo: The Sin War was no mere random story. Its story became the foundation of the Diablo III storyline.

Umaro sold the Diablofans website to the Curse Network, where it resided for about a decade. I departed as a staff member weeks later.

Curse turned Diablofans into the best Diablo III website for news and class builds. There is no argument there. Everyone knows that as a fact. Doesn't mean there aren't good fansites out there.

On December 12, 2018... Fandom (Wikia) acquired Curse and its umbrella of sites: including Diablofans and Wowpedia/Gamepedia.

As of March 21, 2019 -- sadly, Diablofans has gone into READ-ONLY mode. Putting an end to an era.

There won't be Diablo news updates, nor new Diablo III Class builds in the front page and within Diablofans.com anymore. A big loss for the community.

But not everything is lost. A few sites out there have risen to somewhat fill the void, even if just a bit.

I hope that WorldofSanctuary.com can be a place to discuss Diablo III, Diablo II: Remastered, and future Diablo projects.

With the help of 3Di (phpBB Studio), and CarlX, WorldofSanctuary.com will have the following features:
  • Diablo III Create Build (3Di)
  • Blizzard Oauth login (3Di)
  • Diablo II Create Build (CarlX)
They are not staff members, however. 3Di is a phpBB extensions developer. CarlX is a code developer with years of Diablo gameplay and knowledge.

The Diablo III Class Build tool will be available approximately around mid-May 2019, according to 3Di. He showed me a preview of what he's accomplished so far. No custom colors and UI yet. Just sharing the preview so that you know it is in development and coming.
